Chasing the God Particle

PictureCern
by Susan Scharfman

“Everyone who is seriously involved in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that a spirit is manifest in the laws of the Universe–a spirit vastly superior to that of man, and one in the face of which we with our modest powers must feel humble.” – Albert Einstein

The Higgs Boson
Is there a secret, invisible force field running the universe? Thousands of the most able and brilliant scientists at the world's largest atom smasher, the Large Hadron Collider on the Swiss-French border, seemed to think so when they confirmed finding the Higgs boson particle. The existence of this sub-atomic particle would explain all others, and how they fit together in the mystery of life. Physicists refer to it as the “God” particle.

The Huffington Post reports, “This time the stakes were more than just Nobel Prizes, bragging rights or just another quirkily named addition to the zoo of elementary particles that make up nature at its core. The “HIGGS boson” would be the only visible manifestation of the Harry Potterish notion suggested in 1964 by Peter Higgs of the University of Edinburgh: that there is a secret, invisible force field running the universe. Without the Higgs boson to explain why electrons and matter have mass, everything in the universe would be pretty much the same, a bland fizz of sub-atomic rubble running around at the speed of light. With Higgs, there could be atoms and stars, and us.”

Pan-STARRS – The Universe As a Busy Place
The Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) sits atop Maui’s volcano prowling for asteroids, comets and other possible space visitors.

Billions of years old, the comet Pan-STARRS, named after its Hawaiian telescope, passed within 100 million miles of Earth the first week in March 2013 and later approached within 28 million miles of our sun and inside Mercury’s orbit; its first-ever cruise through the inner solar system and closest move toward us.

This colossal ball of ice comes from a distant cloud of bodies beyond the orbits of Neptune and Pluto. As a reminder, in relation to the sun, the planetary lineup is: mercury, venus, earth, mars, jupiter, saturn, uranus, neptune. Pluto got kicked out of the club and is no longer considered a planet. (See my ezine article PLUTO, Cast Off and Treated Like a Bum). And now, an even brighter visitor is on the way in November–Comet ISON. ISON gets its name from Russian astronomers at the International Scientific Optical Network.

Never having passed by Earth before, how did Pan-STARRS get propelled toward our inner solar system? And why are there so many other ETs in such a short time? The Russians suffered a disastrous asteroid collision recently. Why should we care about any of this? The broader implication is one that William Shakespeare evokes in Hamlet: “there are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of.” Mr. Shakespeare was a pretty cool fellow then and still is.

Nothing Exists That is Separate From God
Natural law tells us there's no hit or miss in the universe. Matter and antimatter act and react in the same orderly fashion all the time. Even something in our bones tells us there are no accidents. The planets orbit our sun in the same systematic trajectory. No clock radio shouts out, “hey, time to wake up and get moving, stay in your lane, don't bump into anything along the way.” Everything happens automatically, like breathing. How do all earthly things and all quantum space matter know this, and humans don’t?

Many people conclude it’s because we humans live in the old brain, the prehistoric holdover from millions of years. Our ancient conditioned mind has its own rigid ideas about right, wrong, good, bad. We see ourselves as apart from nature, separate from God, filled with fear and anxiety. As long as the ancient mind continues to live in this duality of “the other,” of being separate, we humans cannot be in oneness with God. A change in awareness needs to happen for there to be a planetary shift in consciousness. Seekers speak of their journey from the head to the heart. But maybe it needn’t be an odyssey. Those few inches can happen in an instant. Since nothing exists that is not God, the “God particle” is within you and without you. It is you.
